Both Wegovy® (semaglutide) and Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) are given as a once-weekly injection under the skin. Most patients find the injection simple and comfortable after the first few doses.
Before using your medication for the first time, carefully read the patient information leaflet provided with your pen and follow the instructions from your doctor or Medara clinical team.
Before You Start
Wash Your Hands
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling your pen.
Check Your Pen
Before every injection, make sure:
You have the correct medication and dose.
The medication has not expired.
The pen has not been frozen.
The liquid appears clear and colourless.
Do not use the pen if the medication looks cloudy, discoloured, or contains particles.
Where to Inject
These medications are injected into the fatty tissue just under the skin. You can inject into:
Stomach (abdomen) – at least 5 cm away from the belly button.
Front of the thigh.
Upper arm (if someone is helping you).
Avoid injecting into areas that are:
Bruised
Red
Tender
Scarred
Irritated
Try to rotate injection sites each week rather than using exactly the same spot every time.
Step-by-Step Injection Guide
Step 1: Prepare the Injection Site
Clean the chosen area with an alcohol swab or soap and water.
Allow the skin to dry completely before injecting.
Step 2: Prepare the Pen
Remove the pen cap according to the instructions supplied with your medication.
If your pen requires a new needle attachment, attach a fresh needle securely before use. Never reuse needles.
Step 3: Inject Your Dose
Place the pen firmly against your skin at the injection site.
Press the injection button (if required for your pen).
Keep the pen pressed firmly against the skin until the injection is complete.
Many pens make clicking sounds during the injection. Continue holding the pen in place until the dose window shows completion or until instructed by your pen device.
For reusable pens, it is usually recommended to count slowly to 6 after the dose counter reaches zero to ensure the full dose has been delivered.
Step 4: Remove the Pen
Remove the pen straight away from the skin.
A small drop of blood or medication at the injection site can be normal.
If needed, gently press the area with cotton or gauze. Do not rub the skin.
Safe Disposal
Used needles should be placed into a sharps container or a hard plastic container with a secure lid.
Do not throw loose needles into household rubbish bins.
If you are unsure about disposal options in your area, ask your pharmacy or Medara clinical team.
Storage Instructions
Unused Pens
Store in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C.
Keep the medication in its original packaging and away from direct sunlight.
Important
Do not freeze the pen.
Do not use medication that has been frozen.
Keep out of reach of children.
If travelling in hot weather, use an insulated medication pouch to help maintain the recommended temperature.
Helpful Tips
Inject on the same day each week.
Setting a phone reminder can help you stay consistent.
Taking the pen out of the fridge 15–30 minutes before injection may make the injection more comfortable.
If you experience mild nausea, some patients find evening injections easier to tolerate.
Stay hydrated and eat smaller meals if you experience gastrointestinal side effects.
